When people feel valued, respected and supported for their differences and where they are most unique, they have a stronger sense of belonging—and belonging is good for business. According to a BetterUp survey of nearly 2,000 full-time employees across industries, high belonging was linked to a whopping 56% increase in job performance, a 50% drop in turnover risk, and a 75% reduction in sick days. (For a 10,000-person company, that would result in annual savings of more than $52M.) One way you can increase the sense of belonging in your organization is by encouraging people to talk about their uniqueness and where they are most different. Ask: What makes you unique? How has this uniqueness supported you in your life, your relationships and your career? Then: Brainstorm words to describe their uniqueness and acknowledge them for it! Example: “You’re highly adaptable, and I love working with you because you always take curveballs in stride.”
